Just been to Sri LankaHi all,
I have just been to Sri Lanka for the weekend and I wanted to tell you how amazing the country is! I am currently on secondment in India and I love to travel and see as much of the world as I can (39 countries and counting so far!). So I decided to go with my friends for a long weekend in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The highlight of my trip was a day trip down to Kandy and on the way we stopped at an elephant orphanage. Elephants that live there are orphansed as babies and need looking after as elephants can only feed themselves from the age of 5 onwards as their teeth aren't developed enough to chew tree leaves before then. We saw them being bottle fed and saw some poor elephants who were either blinded from tusk hunters or had bad arthritis and couldn't survive without human intervention. There are lots of families who have elephants as pets in Sri Lanka, hard to believe isn't it? Elephants are just so docile and sweet and loving.
We then went on an elephant ride. Now I have big problems with animal cruelty and didn't want to go on unless I felt it was okay. These elephants were rescued from working as lumber carriers, they used to carry about 1.2 tonne of weight on their trunks. Now they carry 2 humans per elephant as a way to get away from the logging so that sat okay with me. The ride was incredible. It was through the local village and I thought the cars would scare them but they didn't. We then went through a pinapple village and had fresh pinapples, then a coconut village and drank fresh coconut milk and finally to a buddhist temple where the keep the relic of the original tooth of Buddah himself.
It was amazing and I'm still on a high. I highly recommend Sri Lanka as a holiday destination!

i'm prob not the only one on this forum who will never be brave enough to make a trip like that ourselves...so it's lovely to hear all about it from you.

Oh I would be just terrified to travel there!!! Being so far from home is just torture for me. It's so great to hear about it though. Sounds wonderful...I'd be jealous if I weren't so scared...
