for the horsey girls....

hi
this is one for the horsey girls on the forum....
my poor boy freddie has two bald patches on his hind legs where he's rubbed them together. they're all cut and raw...
Sad
he's stamping and generally irritated by them. came on literally overnight.
the vet was up yesterday and took a look. thinks it's mites and gave him a jab.
just wondered....i was told i don't need to hibiscrub the area or use any kind of barrier cream now. is that right? i would have thought it would have helped to treat the area too?!?!
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Hi Gail,

A few of the horses on our yard have mites and have had the vet up - vet has prescribed frontline, not sure whether they have had jabs too.  One of the horses had it pretty bad - she had cut herself scratching but it didn't show as she had a lot of feather (we have pruned it all off now - she looks rather strange as she isn't clipped anywhere else!).  The owner is keeping the wounds clean I think with warm salty water if they get at all gungy or get bedding stuck in the scabs.  I guess that the suggestion to not use barrier cream is to allow the area to dry out?  I'm afraid I'm far from an expert on this as luckily my boy doesn't seem to be affected (now that would be a nightmare if I had to try to clip his legs... he doesn't like clippers!)

Hope he's looking better today

Thanks Lins
He's baldier than ever, I'm afraid
Sad
But not particularly bothered by it now so the jab must be helping.
Someone else mentioned Frontline to me .... might give that a try.
It would be a nightmare if he needed clipped cos he has tickly legs. He doesn't bother about the clippers buzzing around his ears or anything....but go near  the legs and he's all over the place. Lol.
He seems to have done an adequate job by himself, rubbing away all the hair!!!
Bless him.....
How's your boy?
You got any pictures? Would love to see him.

Hmm he might have caused damage to the skin when he was scratching before and it's taken a little while for the hair to fall out?  Glad he's better though.  Wish mine didn't mind clippers round his ears!

My boy is good, I'm a complete numpty and can't figure out how to post pix on here - I have some on my facebook, are you on there?

well i AM on facebook.....but i rarely use it.
i'm a total technophobe and have never sat down and figured out how it all works.
so i have an empty profile.
lol
but would be great to see your pix, if you could give me the idiots guide (hee hee) on how to find them.

omg marie...
even tho i knew that was coming - i STILL jumped!! lol
what spooked him?
he was going beautifully too.
how did you get on in the end?

Marie

It was a car and trailer coming down the road by the arena - he hates things like that.

We only got 56.90 for that test, shame, but these things happen!  Laughing
Tapir

Well sat!  I had one of those today due to a plastic bag blowing towards him.  56.9 - shame he looks lovely to me!. Wish I could do sitting trot as well as you do!

i was thinking the same thing about the sitting trot actually!!!!
very dignified
i'd be bouncing about like a maniac

my poor beautiful boy fred needed the vet the other night.
was bringing him in from the field and my little boy said to me 'mummy...what's that big black mark on his leg?'
i ran my hand over it and it was BLOOD. soaked all the way down to his wee hoof.
Sad
he had a huge deep gash on his foreleg...
bathed it with hibiscrub then hosed his whole leg....and called a vet.
he needed three staples and five days worth of antibiotics.
poor freddie.
he feels so sorry for himself. whenever you go near that leg he waves it about in the air as if 'don't touch mummy...it hurts' and he puts on his big sad eyes.
he was such a wee star tho....stands and gets it  bathed even tho he hates it.

We used to put barrier cream on if they were being turned out and it was very wet or muddy and take it off as soon as they were stabled... I miss working at the stables, but hey at least i've found a riding school and am back on board! ^_^

i had to get rid of my beloved boy cos i've split with my partner and can't afford the livery bill by myself.
Sad
miss him like mad. but still get to go see him every now and again.
i had him on loan, and the woman who took him from me is a b*tch. (thankfully i know she'll take good care of fred, but she's terrible in the company of other PEOPLE!)
everyone says she's weird. originally she said i could go visit...then, once she'd got his passport and all his rugs and tack off me, she IGNORED all my texts asking how fred is doing.
eventually i texted his owner (the woman i had him on loan from)...who said 'go see him. at the end of the day he's still my horse.'
she also texted recently to say he's got a suspensory ligament injury and is on six weeks box rest before review.
my poor baby.
